La Guerra de las Malvinas o Guerra del Atlántico Sur fue un conflicto armado entre la República Argentina y el Reino Unido que tuvo lugar en las islas Malvinas, Georgias del Sur y Sándwich del Sur. La guerra comenzó 2 de abril el día que desembarcaron los soldados argentinos en las islas y finalizó el 14 de junio de 1982, cuando Gran Bretaña recuperó los tres archipiélagos. La causa fue la lucha por la soberanía sobre estos archipiélagos australes, tomados en 1833 y dominados desde entonces por el Reino Unido, algo nunca aceptado por Argentina, que los sigue reclamando como parte integral de su territorio, y los incluye como parte de su provincia de Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur. Políticamente, en la Argentina, la derrota de la guerra trajo la caída de la junta militar que gobernaba el país; en el Reino Unido, por su parte, la victoria en el enfrentamiento ayudó a que el gobierno conservador de Margaret Thatcher lograra la reelección en las elecciones el año 1983.

Saludamos a todos los veteranos y recordamos a todos los soldados caídos en esta guerra.

Coffee Culture in Argentina

In our spanish classes, and even in this elebaires blog, we detail the cultural significance of Mate, and its place in the homes of all Argentines. Many of you have tried this national beverage with varied results and you may have even purchased a mate gord during your stay. For those of you who didn’t take to Mate so well, you may have been pleased to discover the thriving café culture in Buenos Aires. But what is coffee’s place in this society?

Many people choose to flock to Buenos Aires for the city's unique expression of European beautyand class with the Latino attitude of ease and an ability to enjoy. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the cafés scattered generously along its streets. As many of you may have noticed, in Buenos Aires it is not common place to see Porteños (the name given to locals of Buenos Aires) walking with coffees. Unlike many parts of the Western world where the daily commuters are often spotted with their styrofoam Starbuck’s cups in hand, the Porteños prefer to linger over their coffees. So the next time you are in a café, notice those locals next to you either pouring over a newspaper, catching up with friends or simply enjoying the moment with a cortado (espresso with a dash of milk) and medialuna (croissant). So what can you expect of the coffee here in a predominantly mate-drinking society?

Well thanks to the Italian immigrants who flocked to Argentina in the late 19^t^h century, Argentina has enjoyed and sustained a coffee culture built on the espresso... you will be hard pressed to find filtered coffee here, or cafe americano as the locals aptly refer to it. What you will find however, are the delicious Italian coffee standards with some argentine flare. For your reference (and enjoyment) we have included a brief translation of coffees that you will see on an average menu:

Café* = espresso/ short black

Café en jarrito/ café doble = double espresso

Cortado* = macchiato/ espresso with a dash of milk (this is the most popular among the Porteños, be sure to give it a try while you’re here)

Americano = a shot of espresso diluted with hot water

Café con leche = latte/ flat white

Capuchino = cappuccino

Lagrima* = a lot of milk with a dash of coffee (depending on where you go, this could also be a latte)

Submarino = hot milk with a bar of melting chocolate that you drop in to create a hot chocolate to your liking

* These coffees can be made into doubles (cup size coffees) by adding a doble to the end of the name e.g. lagrima doble

Basically, whatever your coffee craving, this city can accommodate. So truly embrace the Porteño culture while in Buenos Aires, try a café and discover what kind of coffee experience you like. As a word of caution, be careful not to fall into the trap of accompanying every coffee with a delicious medialuna (croissant). They are sinfully addictive and too many may have adverse effects on your waistline (speaking as a former medialuna addict). We’d love to hear your thoughts, experiences and even recommendations. Por eso el Viernes 10 de marzo visitamos nuevamente la obra de los maristas en Tigre para compartir una tarde diferente con los chicos que diariamente recurren al centro Capilla Champagnat.

Fue una tarde increíble: practicamos inglés, cantamos, jugamos al fútbol, compartimos la merienda y nos conocimos... hay mucho por aprender del otro siempre...

Es interesante aprender a observar las cosas cotidianas y los hábitos de la gente de otra cultura.

Los chicos que participan de todas las actividades de la Capilla Champagnat en Carupá, nos recibieron con mucha alegría y se nos acercaron curiosos para saber de nosotros, ¡y nosotros queríamos saber de ellos!... Un poco de conversación y listo! Por eso ahora, compartí tus experiencias aquí!

Breaking away...

In the month of March (Marzo), we in Argentina are blessed with two extra long (4 day) weekends!!! This is the perfect opportunity to get out of the city and do some exploring. This time of year is ideal for all types of adventures; from the glaciers in the south to the waterfalls in the north. But if you haven’t come to Argentina for the cold, then this could be an ideal time to see the south. While temperatures are still averaging 15˚C (60˚F) and the sight of the glaciers on those clear blue days are made even more spectacular by the thundering sound of ice breaking off and tumbling into the icy waters below.

El Calafate is typically the base for this type of exploration, situated centrally between many glaciers with its own airport. While flights leave regularly from Buenos Aires through LAN Argentina or Aerolineas Argentinas, they are not always reliable, so don’t plan your trip too tightly or you might be in frantic rescheduling. The town of El Calafate is quaint and has undergone rapid development as a result of the increased interest in the quickly disappearing glaciers. The town is full of souvenir stores but be prepared to pay tourist prices for them!

The main attraction is the Perito Moreno Glacier, situated 85km (53miles) from El Calafate (a magnificent drive). Options of viewing the Glacier range from a lengthy walkway with many picture-perfect vantage points or a boat trip to get you closer to the action. Another breath-taking experience is the Upsala Glacier, reached from El Calafate by boat, with its surrounding old-english estancias. The Upsala Glacier is losing approximately 200m of ice a year, and has been the Greenpeace poster for Global Warming effects.

In the area, the spectacular Fitzroy Mountain can also be visited. These attractions are disbursed over quite a wide area and can be reached only by car or bus. There are a number of companies offering day trip to these sights and for those more daring, there are a number of car rental companies in downtown El Calafate.

All in all, El Calafate offers a clean break from the big smoke, Buenos Aires. Its fresh air, wide open spaces and once in a lifetime view will quench the thirst for an outdoor adventure and can be achieved comfortably over four days. For these upcoming long weekends, consider an escape to the greener pastures of El Calafate.

For those electing to stay in the city, or those looking for a different adventure, stay tuned for what Elebaires has on offer. These alternatives will be announced in the coming weeks and are sure to please.

Lonely Planet: Recognition for a job well done!

Planning for a holiday abroad can be incredibly time consuming and mentally exhausting as endless options for a variety of experiences appear in our google searches. In times like these, we look for those familiar names, those sources of clarity in times of confusion. A source synonymous with travel and adventure, an organization ready to guide you on any journey is none other than the Lonely Planet.

For over thirty years, they have done the leg work for us, often saving us from the disastrous restaurant experience undoubtedly followed by a painful bout of food poisoning; the well-situated hostel that does not consider cockroaches a household pet; and of course how best to spend our time whilst on our individual adventure. For years they have provided us with this support and they haven’t let us down yet. A Face Lift: Puerto Madero

In the late 1800s, Puerto Madero , a newly developed port along Rio de la Plata, was an engineering landmark and the city’s solution to the challenge of accommodating the numerous cargo ships. Ten years after construction was complete, Puerto Madero was made obsolete as bigger cargo ships made entering the port an impossible feat. Fast forward through 100 years of neglect and Puerto Madero has now become one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires.

The west bank, with its old red-brick buildings, offers the authenticity of the old, with the comforts of the new. Restaurants across the west bank of Puerto Madero, cater primarily to the tourists who flock to the waterfront to enjoy the fresh breezes, a sturdy sidewalk (not to be taken for granted in Argentina), and of course, a juicy argentine steak. Puente de la Mujer (Women’s Bridge) is the most recent addition to the connectors between the east and the west. Designed by Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava, Puente de la Mujer encapsulates the modern outlook of the city.

While the west bank has maintained the portside exterior, the development across the east bank could be likened to Shanghai (okay, severe exaggeration but you get the point) with high-rise office buildings and new apartments making the cityscape almost unrecognizable. While the wide avenues are certainly a consistent feature in Buenos Aires, the feel of this neighbour is eerily similar to those found in the States. Further across, the Ecological Reserve offers a safe haven for the exercise junkies to get their weekly fix with bicycles and joggers dominating the paths, however it also offers a variety of local flora for those interested in a slower-paced experience.

The good news is that while Puerto Madero has undergone a face lift, the locals are still the same. You’ll still see Argentines sweating it out on the pavement, or trying to soak in that last bit of sunshine, or ever-so-coolly sitting at the corner cafe with a cortado (macchiato). Whatever it is you are looking for, Puerto Madero certainly offers a sweet escape from the chaos that surrounds it. While in Buenos Aires, be sure to witness the change that is going on as the city begins to shake off the old and embrace the new.

La navidad en Argentina

¿Cómo celebramos la navidad los argentinos?

Se hacen reuniones entre familiares y amigos en la noche del 24 de diciembre, cenamos y a medianoche vamos al arbolito (adornado con bolas, cintas, muñecos de papá Noel y un pesebre) para abrir los regalos. Por lo general se comparte con toda la familia unida, incluyendo tíos, primos, abuelos y demás parientes.

Se hacen comidas frescas porque es verano y hace mucho calor: pollo, cerdo, ensaladas y helados. A causa de la inmigración, nos quedaron muchas tradiciones europeas, como comer nueces, turrones y pan dulce, después de la cena.

Generalmente la comida se prepara “a la canasta”, cada integrante de la familia lleva algo, o todas las mujeres de la familia se reúnen para cocinar.

Cuando dan las doce se tiran cohetes y fuegos artificiales, se levantan las copas para brindar con sidra o champagne y todos nos damos un beso deseándonos “feliz navidad”. Luego se abren los regalos que por lo general para los chicos son juguetes y para los adultos son variados, ¡pero todos reciben un regalo!; entre las mujeres se regalan ropa interior rosada para estrenar en año nuevo porque dicen que es de buena suerte.

En las iglesias es común hacer pesebres vivientes; como la mayoría de las familias en argentina son de religión católica, la navidad también tiene un sentido espiritual: cada año se renueva la esperanza. El pesebre viviente es la representación de cómo fue el nacimiento de Jesús en Belén.

El día 25 de diciembre también almorzamos en familia, muchas veces con los familiares con quienes pudimos celebrar la noche buena.

A la semana siguiente nos volvemos a reunir para celebrar el fin de año, este es un evento más social que familiar se organizan fiestas y las personas después de recibir el año nuevo salen a bailar para celebrar y brindar con amigos.

Day at the Polo Fields

This past Sunday a group of Elebaires students partook in an excusrsion to Final Copa el Remanso Polo Club. For only 150 pesos (USD$38) we received transportation to and from the polo fields, tickets to the match, all you can eat/drink, and an after party. How could I pass up such a great deal?! We rode in a double-decker bus to the Polo Club which was 100 km (32 miles) outside the city. Upon arriving to the beautiful estate, we were met by waiters with trays of choripán and steak sandwiches as well as wine and champagne.

Sunday was an unseasonably warm day in Buenos Aires 33°C (91°F). Lucky for us there was a nice breeze on the fields which made it quiet comfortable to be outside. Despite having no clue what was going on, the match was very entertaining to watch. It was so incredible to watch how the players controlled the horses’ movements. After the match was over we walked to the stables and got a chance to see these beautiful creatures up close. As the sun began to set, a DJ started to play music and the crowd slowly began to dance. It was so fun dancing under the stars! Sunday was one of those days that I honestly have to say to my self "How lucky am I to be in Buenos Aires right now?"

Escaping the City

As amazing as Buenos Aires is, there are times where one needs to escape the bustling city. Luckily, you do not need to go far to experience a completely different world. One only needs to travel about 113km (70miles) outside Capital Federal to visit the San Antonio de Areco Estancia (Spanish word for ranch). Estancias show the history and the essence of Argentine culture. Their gauchos (ranch workers on horseback) are of similar importance to national folklore and identity as the cowboy in North America. Take a day trip to an estancia and enjoy different activities which show gaucho customs such as horseback riding, singing/dancing and most important eating!

Right now is the best time to go as there is a Gaucho Festival during the first ten days of November. In a tradition running more than 70 years gauchos from all over Argentina come for this Fiesta de la Tradición. There are activities all week but the main attraction is Sunday’s jineteada gaucha. With its origins in the heart of traditional Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, the jineteada is basically the Southern Hemisphere’s take on the rodeo. Those lucky enough to have been there this past Sunday (October 7th) witnessed the crème de la crème of the gaucho world compete. On Wednesday, November 10th, the festival’s closing day, all the gauchos gathered for a bonfire to celebrate the Día de la Tradición, eulogizing the life of writer José Hernández, famous for his epic gauchesque poem, Martín Fierro.

Nuevas reglas ortográficas para el español

En diciembre serán publicadas las nuevas reglas ortográficas para todos los países hispanohablantes, dónde se explicará el porqué de las diferentes reglas y normas como así también los cambios y novedades realizadas por el comité de la Real Academia Española.

Algunos de estos cambios son realmente polémicos: Ahora la "y", ya no será “i griega” sino “ye”.

En América, deberán dejar de llamar "be larga" y "be corta" a la "b" y la "v": ahora serán "be" y "uve".

Chilean Miners are rescued!

Scenes of elation erupted on the surface of the San Jose gold and copper mine in Chile’s northern Atacama Desert on 13th October 2010, one of the most important days for not only Chile but the rest of the world as millions of people across the world tuned into watch live TV coverage of the rescue.

At the time of writing this article 24 out of 33 miners had been rescued after being trapped 2,275ft underground for 69 days. Officials hope to have completed the rescue mission by the end of the day.

One by one, the trapped miners climbed into a narrow steel cage, equipped with a gas mask and escape hatches and took their journey through the escape shaft to freedom, where emotional family members and even the Chilean President Sebastian Pinera greeted them. The first miner to be rescued was Samuel Avalos Acuna the 31-year-old second-in-command of the miners because he was deemed to be in the best condition. As Avalos strode out of his capsule, onlookers cheered with the chant ‘Chi! Chi! Chi! Le! Le! Le!’. The 3 next fittest miners followed, the next group of 10 included the miners with health problems. The last group was the rescue workers who joined the trapped miners prior to their rescue.

Many worry that the miners’ journey up the steel shaft is only the beginning of their recovery, as they face months of temper physical and psychological rehabilitation. At first, the miners will be very tired and weak and will need intense medical attention as they adjust to light and fresh air, an expert warns.

In the capital, Santiago, a chorus of motorists’ horns could be heard throughout the day. In the nearby Capiapo, from where 24 of the miners come from, the mayor cancelled school so both parents and children could observe the rescue. Even as we write this in Buenos Aires, the joyful sound of playful beeping can be heard, lifting the mood of all. Here at Elebaires, we wish the miners well on their journey back to recovery!

Latin America gets a Nobel Prize!

Mario Vargos Llosa is a Peruvian writer who over the years has written about political corruption and military dictatorships in Latin America. The Nobel Prize in Literature 2010 was awarded to Mr Llosa ‘for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of his individual’s resistance, revolt, and defeat’ according to the Swedish Academy on their website.

Vargos Llosa’s rise to fame came after the release of several novels The Time of the Hero (La ciudad y los perros), The Green House (La Case Verde) and the monumental Conversation in the Cathedral (Conversación en la Catedral). Llosa has covered many different literary genres in his novels including: comedies, murder mysteries, historical novels, and political thrillers.

Llosa has also been politically active throughout his career; over the course of his life, he has made a gradual shift from the political left towards the right. While at first he supported the Cuban revolutionary government of Fidel Castro, Vargas Llosa later became embittered. He ran for the Peruvian presidency in 1990 with the center-right Frente Democrático (FREDEMO) coalition.

At a press conference in New York, Vargos Llosa claimed that he thought the early-morning phone call notifying him of his nobel prize was a prank. He carried on by saying ‘I am very grateful to the Swedish Academy’. ‘It is a realy surprise’. Vargos Llosa said he thought the prize was being given not only to him but to the Spanish Language, ‘a very energetic, creative language,’.

We completely agree! Why not study this energetic, creative language here in Buenos Aires. Get to know the continent that Vargos Llosa is so proud of.

Trying to kick that coffee habit?

If your one of those people that cannot function early in the morning without that cup of coffee and have developed an addiction that you can´t kick, maybe its time to look for some alternatives.

Mate is the drink for you. Today at Elebaires, Valeria taught the students about one of the national drink of Argentina, Mate. The health benefits associated with Mate make it the clear alternative to the post caffeine crash many get with coffee. Vendors claim it can, "boost immunity, restore youthful hair color, delay aging, combat fatigue, control the appetite and eliminate insomnia,"

Mate (pronounced mah-tey) in Spanish is a tea-like beverage made from steeping dried leaves of yerba mate in hot water. Mate is served with a metal straw (la bombilla) in a hollow gourd. The end of la bombilla is flared, with small holes or slots that allow the brewed liquid in.

What interested the students the most, was the rules associated with drinking mate. Mate is traditionally drunk in a particular social setting, such as family gatherings or with friends. The whole group uses the same gourd and bombilla. The person who serves the mate is called el cebador. Typically, el cebador fills the gourd and drinks the mate completely to ensure it is of good quality. In some areas, if you pass the first gourd to another person it is considered bad manners. The gourd is then refilled and passed to the drinker on the right of el cebador. The second person drinks all of the mate and there is no need to thank el cebador. La bombilla makes a loud sucking noise if there is no liquid left. This is not considered rude. When someone decides they have had their correct sufficiency of mate, they thank el cebador and hand the gourd back to them.

After learning all about the rules, the students went on to try this new drink. Many faces looked slightly disgruntled after their first sip but were willing to give it another go. Hop down to one of Buenos Aires’ famous souvenir markets and get yourself a gourd!

The end of the week is the beginning of the weekend!

In Argentina many porteños are about to embark on their separate adventures for their long weekend, the last long weekend before December. Almost everyone is taking the most of this opportunity and is off to recuperate in various hotspots around the country.

Recuperation may not be the case for some, especially here at Elebaires. We realized this after discussing everyone’s plans in class, many students are certainly not using this time to relax. A couple of students are off to celebrate Spring Break in Mar del Plata. The coast will be heaving with students from hundreds of different colleges. When trying to research what to expect in Mar del Plata this weekend, all that came up on our search was the ‘bootilicious bikini contest!’, Enjoy!

A camping trip to Gualeguaychu in the Nadubaysal forest was another trip organised by Pablo and the students are thrilled for the adventure! Drinks, food and songs around the campfire! Have a good time guys!

Others were off to Cordoba for their version of a South American Oktoberfest, to be surrounded by people in Lederhosen and national costumes, German music, food and beer. Lots of beer. We hope you all have a great time and take some pictures!

Finally can we take the chance to say farewell to all the students who completed their course today!! We had six fantastic students complete there stay at ELEBAIRES and were excited to receive their diplomas. Thank you all for your great participation in our school, we love you guys!

What to do in Buenos Aires?

As usual, we have a big week planned here at Elebaires! Tonight, a large group of the pupils and teachers are off to La Bomba de Tiempo. This live, improvised drum show is absolutely incredible, very energetic, and a MUST see in Buenos Aires. It is enjoyed by both locals and tourists and there is almost always something to do afterwards. Due to its vast popularity, there are sometimes difficulties in getting tickets, so it´s always a good idea to book in advance, which you can easily do by contacting us.

This afternoon, Jouliette took a few pupils on a cycling tour around the city for about an hour. Always fun if you’re new to the city and useful to get your bearings! Thanks Jouliette!

Tomorrow, some of us are really getting in to the Argentinean spirit and we are off to learn how to play Polo. Argentine polo is considered to be the best in the world. We will leave after Spanish lessons and after a few hours of lessons we will have a match. Good to get the practice in before the season begins!

Wednesday, we are going to learn how to be a true porteño by learning how to salsa. A great way to get to know your new classmates a better! There is nothing more fun than learning to dance with Argentines, they work all day and party all night.

On Thursday its time to explore the Museo de Plate stadium. On Saturday, you can cure that hangover with playing a bit of football with us or come with us to Tigre, just 30 minutes away from Buenos Aires. It is a popular getaway for weary porteños and travelers alike. Tigre is well known for its delta. You can explore the areas with boat rides to peek at local stilt houses and colonial mansions. Or other water-related activity includes kayaking, wakeboarding, canoeing or even sculling!

Va ser un partido emocionante, los mejores jugadores del mundo compitiendo entre sí todos juntos en un mismo estadio!!.

Fuimos a la boca con todos nuestros estudiantes! Tomamos el colectivo 86 (aprendimos como sacar boleto) hasta el estadio de Boca Juniors “la bombonera”. Luego caminamos hasta el corazón del Caminito donde cada grupo recorrió el lugar con su profesor realizando diferentes actividades y consignas propuestas por sus profesores, algunos recorrieron el Museo Quinquela Martín, otros conversaron con vendedores, bailarines y personas del lugar y practicaron mucho todo lo aprendido en clase.

¡Fue una mañana muy divertida y enriquecedora!

9 de Julio: Independencia Argentina

En este año tan especial, el año del Bicentenario de la Revolución de Mayo de 1810 cuando comenzó en nuestro país todo el proceso de desvinculación de la Madre Patria, queremos hacer un breve comentario sobre lo que significó este paso importante para América del Sur.
Ser independientes, tener un gobierno propio, una identidad propia, decidir las propias leyes y tener una justicia propia no fue un cambio que se realizó de un día para otro. Y decimos que todo nuestro continente estuvo unido en esos años por la misma causa, porque realmente así fue y se vivió. Desde el Cono Sur, Chile, Argentina y Perú unidos por la causa bajo las órdenes del General San Martín.
Hoy 9 de Julio, pero en 1816 se firmó el Acta de la Independencia de las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata en una pequeña provincia de Argentina, en Tucumán. Desde el corazón de nuestro país salió el grito de libertad.
Hoy en día se puede visitar la Casa Histórica donde se celebró el Congreso de Tucumán y se puede sentir el valor de aquellos hombres argentinos, criollos, que decidieron darle un nuevo rumbo a nuestra historia.

Copa Mundial de Fútbol ¿pasión global?

En estos días en la escuela no paramos de hablar de fútbol. Cada estudiante quiere ver el partido de su país y saber qué está pasando con la primera ronda de clasificación. Sin duda el Mundial nos da de qué hablar y es un tema desde donde podemos aprender muchísimo y dialogar.
Culturalmente el deporte dice mucho de una nación, y en Sudamérica no podemos dejar de mencionar que el fútbol es una pasión continental. La semana pasada nos encontramos todos a ver el partido de Argentina vs. Corea (4-1) ;) y todos lo vivimos con intensidad aunque éramos de distintos países. La ciudad apagada, no había autos, no había movimiento de autobuses, no había gente en la calle. Todos adentro, frente a un televisor. ¡Todos gritando cuando anotaron el gol!
Para ilustrar un poco lo que significa el fútbol al menos, para los argentinos, los invitamos a ver con atención esta publicidad.

Visita guiada al MALBA

El martes pasado estudiantes y amigos de Elebaires fuimos a hacer una visita guiada al museo de arte latinoamericano de Buenos Aires.
Fue una salida súper especial ya que tuvimos la oportunidad de poder conocer algunas de las obras en profundidad, utilizando diferentes materiales didácticos provistos por el museo para tener un acercamiento más natural a las diferentes obras de arte. La actividad fue totalmente interactiva cada estudiante tuvo que describir imágenes, texturas, olores, etc.
Fue fascinante poder ver como cada unos de nosotros, con la ayuda de los guías, pudo analizar algunas pinturas y esculturas desde un lugar sumamente creativo. Los guías fueron excelentes y nos contaron un poco también sobre los artistas y sus obras.
Fue una actividad imperdible, esperamos pronto volver a repetirla.

Tour en bicicleta + mate + reserva ecológica

Tomar mate es una costumbre muy popular en Argentina, Uruguay y Paraguay... también hay muchísimas personas que en el Sur de Brasil son tan adictas como nosotros a esta bebida. Es difícil describir lo que significa "el mate" porque además de ser una infusión, es un momento de encuentro, un tiempo para charlar con amigos, para compartir cosas... Tal cual como lo hicimos ayer en nuestro tour en bicicleta (bike tour).

Salimos todos juntos de la escuela y con nuestras bicicletas naranjas recorrimos los barrios de San Telmo y Puerto Madero para finalizar el encuentro en la Reserva Ecológica donde nos sentamos a compartir el mate. Así cada fin de semanas miles de familias se escapan a la Reserva para caminar, correr, tomar aire y mientras tanto disfrutan de un sabroso mate a la vera del Río de La Plata.

Felicidades Argentina! 200 años de historia...

Estimados lectores, después de un fin de semana lleno de festejos y celebraciones queríamos dejar guardado en este blog una síntesis de lo que significó para muchos argentinos este 25 de Mayo de 2010.

Las tapas de los diarios del mundo pueden darnos una idea de lo que vivimos... pero otra cosa es lo que cada uno de nosotros sintió en estos días. Millones de personas en cada ciudad, pueblo, y rincón de nuestro país celebró, recordó, conversó con amigos, hijos, vecinos sobre los valores que encarnaron aquellos hombres que decidieron darle un nuevo destino a estas tierras del sur.

Por eso valió la pena el festejo, el acto, el canto del himno nacional argentino en cada escuela, en cada organización y en cada institución. Y eso es lo que dicen las banderas que cuelgan de los balcones, que somos argentinos independientes, hermanos latinoamericanos, personas de bien que buscan darle un camino recto a la patria y que estamos seguros que tenemos un buen futuro por delante... solamente nos falta convecernos de que así será y ponernos ya mismo a continuar trabajando por ello después de este fin de semana de descanso...

Pic-nic del Bicentenario

Ayer el staff de Elebaires convocó a un picnic para estudiantes y amigos de la escuela,

Salimos de la escuela después del mediodía cargados de provisiones y bebidas listos para pasar una tarde divertida de español y juegos. Cuando llegamos al parque de la flor en Recoleta, nos dimos cuenta de que había una invasión de mosquitos, ante nuestra decepción y miedo de ser comidos vivos, decidimos cambiar de locación, terminamos preparando nuestro picnic en la explanada de Canal 7. Aunque el paisaje ya no era tan verde la pasmos genial, jugamos, charlamos y nos reímos mucho.

Y para que nuestra salida fuera completa terminamos comiendo un riquísimo helado en recoleta.

Gracias a todos por haber venido y para los que dejaron Buenos Aires hoy: Los vamos a extrañar!.

Tercera actividad cultural por el Bicentenario

Anoche, en nuestro Palacio Barolo, Cyrena nos dio una clase de tango y nos trató de transmitir los conceptos más importantes del baile. Para destacar algunos: la importancia de la conexión entre los bailarines, quién es el líder y cuál es su forma de guiar en el baile, cómo seguirlo e interpretar el mensaje que sale del movimiento de su cuerpo...

Gracias a todos los que participaron con sus donaciones para los Voluntarios sin Fronteras!!

Aprendimos a dar los primeros pasos y a trabajar la posición del cuerpo, la cabeza y el movimiento de los pies.

Al compás de los tangos más hermosos y bajo el pasaje Barolo iluminado aprendimos y empezamos a empaparnos del baile del arrabal porteño.

Segunda salida por el Bicentenario

En el marco de los festejos del bicentenario, decidimos ir a visitar la manzana de las luces, una manzana llena de historia. El recorrido estuvo muy interesante, vistamos la Sala de Representantes recinto donde funcionó la antigua legislatura de la provincia de Buenos Aires, el Patio de la Procuraduría donde estaba ubicado un gran mercado en la época colonial y finalmente los túneles que estaban destinados a guardar mercaderías que entraban a la ciudad de contrabando. Para finalizar tomamos un riquísimo chocolate caliente el la cafetería temática del lugar, realmente disfrutamos mucho de esta vista guiada aprendimos un poco de historia y practicamos nuestro español!

200 años de vida propia…

Argentina es un país de eso que podemos llamar “recientes”… tener 200 años de historia propia, independiente, en comparación con otros países del mundo es poco. Sin embargo han pasado tantas cosas en estos cortos 200 años que no podemos sintetizarlo en esta humilde entrada del blog.

Dentro del contexto de los procesos de independencia de Sudamérica, y gracias al valor de muchos criollos argentinos, fuimos pioneros en el camino y colaboramos con la liberación también de los países vecinos. Era momento de caminar por cuenta propia y decidir sobre nuestro destino… Así fue que ese mes de mayo de 1810 este proceso de independencia tomó forma y color para llegar al 9 de julio de 1816 con la firma definitiva del Acta de la Independencia. Ser autónomos, organizarse, establecerse, autoabastecerse, educarse, nacer de nuevo a una identidad propia, y elegir el destino de una patria no fue tarea fácil para todos aquellos hombres y mujeres que pelearon por esos ideales de aquel momento.

En su homenaje y por esta historia argentina que recién comienza nosotros desde nuestro lugar celebraremos, recordaremos y reviviremos esos momentos dando como siempre lo mejor, y haciendo carne aquellos valores de patriotismo, libertad y fraternidad.

Organizamos una actividad cultural especial para cada semana de mayo con el fin de vivir “la identidad de los argentinos”. Comeremos comidas típicas, bailaremos, visitaremos lugares históricos importantes y nos tomaremos un pequeño descanso en las afueras de la ciudad para jugar y reflexionar junto a estudiantes de todas partes del mundo que están interesados en saber más de nosotros…

Curso de Cultura

Elebaires tiene un nuevo curso de cultura que comienza el día 17 de Mayo, es para estudiantes que residen en Buenos Aires y que tienen un nivel de español intermedio alto. El costo del curso es de $290 pesos por 16hs de clase (8 clases de dos horas cada una) Ya hemos dictado este curso en el pasado y realmente fue un éxito, los temas que se tratarán en las clases son política, historia, tango, lunfardo, literatura y cine argentino.

Es un curso muy interesante para aquellos que buscan no solo aprender el idioma sino también profundizar en la cultura del lugar, no se lo pierdan!!!

Este año en Argentina celebramos los 200 años del comienzo de la revolución por la independencia. Es un momento especial de reflexión, de revisión histórica y de establecer nuevas promesas y metas para el futuro.
Elebaires como escuela de español comprometida con su entorno, se compromete junto a miembros del Palacio Barolo a realizar un evento cultural con fines solidarios.

Por eso mismo, el 13 de Mayo nos reuniremos para celebrar bailando tango con nuestros estudiantes, amigos, e invitados de toda la ciudad.

La entrada es libre, solamente debés traer un alimento no perecedero que será donado en los comedores donde trabajamos como voluntarios.

¿Por qué es importante que Elebaires ofrezca una variedad de actividades para hacer después de clase? En Elebaires estamos convencidos que la enseñanza del español es más eficaz si el alumno puede vivir realmente lo que aprende en nuestras clases.
Es necesario que el estudiante salga a la calle y practique, hable, escuche, tome notas y luego vuelva a la sala para preguntarle al profesor sus dudas o para focalizar en las destrezas que necesita perfeccionar.
Los cursos de inmersión garantizan que el aprendizaje sea rápido pero el estudiante debe estar comprometido a hablar con locales la mayor cantidad de tiempo posible para aplicar todo lo aprendido en clase en un contexto real.

Por eso, te presentamos el Calendario de Actividades del Mes de Abril, donde podés encontrar algunas propuestas de la escuela que invitan a los estudiantes a conocer más sobre la vida diaria y las costumbres de los porteños. Cada semana Elebaires le envía a sus alumnos un boletín con las actividades, las salidas, los paseos y los eventos que nadie se puede perder mientras está en Buenos Aires. Entre las propuestas tenemos: visitas guiadas, club de conversación, tickets para museos, boliches y tours; tutorías, tardes de cine, salidas de día completo para el fin de semana y ¡mucho más!

Esta semana comenzó a implementarse una serie de festejos mediante los cuales los cibernautas pueden votar por la mejor palabra del idioma español y justificar los motivos de la elección.

El próximo 19 de junio -un día antes del oficial- se celebrará el Día del Español en 42 países de los cinco continentes, por lo que el Instituto Cervantes creó este concurso para que participen los hispanoparlantes del mundo. Al igual que el año pasado, los cibernautas podrán elegir su palabra favorita -en la edición 2009 la ganadora fue "malevo", un término bien argentino- ingresando a la página eldiae.es.

En el actual concurso, "cachivache" encabeza la preferencia, mientras que "libertad", "copón" y "tiquismiquis" (expresiones o dichos ridículamente corteses) completan los cuatro puestos principales. Entre las novedades habrá otros entretenimientos como el de una pizarra para elaborar pictogramas y "el juego del español", que permite medir el grado de conocimiento del idioma.

Además, se volverá a implementar el "ficcionario", colección de vocablos inventados, cuyo ganador hasta el momento es "comprometomentodo", mientras que "pulgatorio" y "vagamundo" completan por ahora el podio. En la edición del año pasado, participaron 73 mil usuarios de 123 países que eligieron su palabra favorita, mientras que el "ficcionario" llegó a tener más de 2.120 términos.

¿Por qué decimos que el fútbol en Argentina es una pasión popular?

Ídolos como Maradona, Passarela, o Kempes, viven historias muy largas de los fanáticos de fúbtol en Argentina, aun décadas después de su carrera. ¿Por qué? Porque en Argentina el fútbol es parte de la cultura del país y como en Brasil es casi una religión. El fútbol de Argentina es uno de lo más lindos y apasionados del mundo.

Los jugadores de fútbol no son los únicos que tienen fama, a veces los fanáticos mismos son más entretenidos que el partido. Argentina es bien conocida por sus fanáticos, gente que no para de gritar y cantar durante todo el partido.

Si vas a un estadio, "cancha", es probable que durante el partido vayas a escuchar muchas malas palabras y siempre vayas a estar en la punta de tu asiento y nunca estés sentado. Podrás sentir la pasión que tienen los fanáticos por sus equipos, esa pasión la verás en sus voces y en sus rostros.

Sunday October 25th is the day that all River and Boca fans have been waiting for, the Super Classic.

It's the day when the two biggest clubs in Argentine football face off for bragging rights for the next year. It's more than a game in Buenos Aires, choosing a team is a religion and going to a Super Classic is like visiting the Vatican.

Even if you don't want to be part of the craziness at the game (although it is absolutely fantastic and so much fun) you will have to find a bar or pub and watch with the locals. This year's match is at River and if you want to get tickets come in to the school and we can set you up. Tickets are pricey, (maximum of $200 U.S, but hopefully less) but this truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Just remember that if you do go to the game to be extremely careful, mind your belongings and pay attention to your surroundings.

But it will be a great time that is for sure!

Viaje en Grupo: Oktoberfest!

En el mes de octubre, en Villa General Belgrano (Córdoba) se vive una época muy especial. Este año, del 2 al 12 de octubre se celebra la Oktoberfest Argentina 2009, 46º Fiesta Nacional de la Cerveza.

Vamos a disfrutar de dos días a pura fiesta, en el Parque Cervecero, ubicado en el centro de la ciudad, donde hay espectáculos característicos de esta festividad: orquestas de música centroeuropea o de otros géneros y grupos de danzas que representan a diversas colectividades.

También dentro de este parque tienen su espacio los stands que ofrecen típicas comidas alemanas y repostería tradicional europea. La cerveza es la principal protagonista de la Fiesta, podemos encontrarla en sus muchas variedades, colores, marcas y tamaños, de variedad artesanal o industrial. A lo largo de la fiesta se viven distintas tradiciones que conforman la esencia de la Fiesta Nacional de la Cerveza.

El desfile por las calles del centro encabezado por el Monje Negro, el espiche del barril de cerveza, el plantado del Maikranz, la elección de la Reina Nacional de la Cerveza y el festejo del Día del Pueblo son parte de esta celebración que es una de las más importantes de nuestro país.

Tras recibir una breve instrucción donde te explicaran en qué consiste el salto y cómo tienes que comportarte, subiremos hasta 3.000 o 3.800 metros (10.000 or 12.000 feet) según tu decisión. Desde esta altura y enganchado con total seguridad a tu instructor saltarás y podrás entonces disfrutar de la magia de un minuto de caída libre, donde alcanzaras una velocidad de 200 km/h; hasta llegar a los 1.500 mts (4.000 feet), altura en la cual tu instructor abrirá el paracaídas.

El salto todavía no habrá terminado, pudiendo disfrutar ahora de unos 5 a 8 minutos de vuelo con tu paracaídas abierto. A continuación aterrizaras suavemente en el mismo punto donde te esperan tus familiares y amigos.

Además disponemos de la opción de guardar estos momentos en video y fotos, para ello contaremos con un cámara-paracaidista profesional que nos acompañará durante todos los pasos de nuestra aventura, y te entregara un DVD con tu salto editado con la mejor música y un CD con mas de 40 fotos digitales de alta resolución.

Accompanied by a professional instructor with thousands of jumps behind him, you can enjoy one of the most memorable moments of a lifetime.

After a short briefing about the exit from the aircraft, control in freefall and the landing, you will take off for a 25 minute flight to 10.000 or 12.000 feet, depending on your choice. Securely attached to a qualified instructor, you will jump and taste almost 1 minute of amazing freefall at 200 km/h¡¡

After the instructor opens the parachute at 4.000 ft, by no means has the experience ended. You can then enjoy 5-8 minutes of flight with the parachute open. The final landing is made in the same area that you took off from where your friends and family will be waiting to greet you.

We offer the option of a video/cameraman jumping with the tandem to make a DVD and the photos of your tandem skydive. The cameraman will make a film and take photos of the passenger in the plane, during freefall and as they land. This option is per person and we’ll give you the DVD and a CD with over 40 high resolution photos.

On Tuesday I returned, with a few fellow class mates, from a three day trip in Mendoza, Argentina. After having spent a little over a month here in the city, it was nice to get away.

Mendoza is Northwest of Buenos Aires. Twelve hours by bus! Fortunately for us, we took an overnighter. Otherwise I think most of the passengers would have gone insane. Elebaires had arranged the whole thing. Our bus tickets, accommodations and two activities (wine tour and day hike in The Andes) were taken care of at school, saving a lot of the hassle of having to do it ourselves - or having done it in the first place. All we were responsible for was food and any additional activities (horseback riding, white-water rafting or paragliding) we wanted to do on our free day.

With tree-lined streets, rushing rivers, plentiful wildlife and The Andes a "hop, skip and a jump" away, Mendoza is a Mecca for the outdoor enthusiast! And I haven't even mentioned the wine. Whether one wants to taste some world class Malbec or pitch a tent on a mountain, Mendoza is a refreshing, quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of BsAs.

Elebaires classes are small so, I didn't know a lot of the other students. This trip was a great opportunity to meet my fellow school mates! I also made friends with students from Mexico, Norway and, other parts of the states who happen to be studying at the many universities here in the city. I would have never had the chance to meet any of them if it was not for this trip. It was a great experience and, I am definitely looking forward to the next one!

Hola a todos!

La próxima semana es una semana especial. Como en Argentina la mayoría de las personas pertenece a la Iglesia Católica, los días jueves y viernes se suspenden las actividades de rutina para que las personas puedan estar libres para participar de las celebraciones. Muchos prefieren tomarse esos días de vacaciones, entonces la ciudad estará vacía! Pueden ver celebraciones religiosas en las calles el día viernes, y se llama Via Crucis (el camino de la cruz). Las personas representan (actúan) los últimos días de la vida de Jesucristo.
El Domingo se celebra la Pascua y todos comemos en familia... se podrá oler mucho asado en la ciudad también!!

This Saturday Nov. 22nd we are headed to Tigre for wakeboarding! The tour includes transportation to Victoria (island near Tigre), a wakeboarding class (equipment included), lunch, and use of volleyball and soccer fields. We will be leaving from Plaza De Mayo at 9am and returning at 9pm. The total cost is 280 pesos. This is a great chance to get out of the city and enjoy some fresh air and fun activities. One of Argentine's favorite past times is Polo and it's something that should not be missed while in Buenos Aires. And not only that, Argentina is the best in the world at the sport, so if you've ever had any interest in watching a match now is your chance. This Saturday, Nov. 15th there is a match in town and the tour includes transfer to and from the game, general admission and a tour guide to tell you about the teams/sport. This Thursday, Oct 16 at 8pm is The Buenos Aires Pub Crawl in Palermo, so start your weekend early and have some drinks and meet travelers from all over the world. For the first hour enjoy drinks and all you can eat pizza and empanadas. Then you'll head off to 3-4 bars where you will receive a welcome "shooter" at each bar as well as discounted drinks. This Saturday Oct 11th is a huge World Cup qualifying match for our Argentine Men's futbol team. World Cup isn't until July 2010 but qualifying games are being held now to decide who participates in the greatest tournament of any sport. Argentina plays group leader Uruguay in Buenos Aires at the River Plate stadium which is a wonderful venue that will be jam packed with true blue Argentine futbol fans! Don't miss Wednesday's "After Office" party at Club Museum (or any Wednesday for that matter!) They play great music, have good drinks and dancing and you can meet many local socialites and people that just want to relax after a long day of work. Get there early (before 10) and entrance is free, plus it is happy hour after all! Most people come pouring in right after work around 8 pm, it's one of the only "early parties" that you can count on each week. From 7-10 it's happy hour, so drinks are 2 for 1! If you want to go later than 10 stop by the office and we'll set you up with free passes. Club Museum is located in San Telmo at 535 Peru (between Venezuela and Mexico). Have fun!

For all you Yankees out there keeping tabs on the drama in the U.S. between McCain and Obama, the time has come to vote and make a difference. Even though you're living abroad, you can still vote! On Wednesday October 8th from 9am to noon you can vote at the U.S. Embassy here in Buenos Aires. Come to the U.S. Embassy located at 4300 Ave. Columbia. Eligible U.S. Citizen voters can cast absentee ballots. complete Federal write-in ballots, register and request absentee ballots.
